Scar
Therapy
Scar Therapy is for you if…
You have recently had a caesarean birth, or had one in the past.
You’d like to change the appearance of your scars.
You experience swelling, numbness, tightness or discomfort around your scar.
A caesarean birth is major surgery, and your body deserves time, care and gentle support to heal fully, both on the surface and deeper within. Even when a scar appears healed, changes can remain in the underlying tissues that may lead to tightness, discomfort or a feeling of restriction over time. Scar tissue forms as part of the body’s natural healing process, helping to protect and repair after surgery. Without support, this tissue can become less flexible and may affect comfort, movement and overall wellbeing. Scar therapy offers a restorative approach to recovery, helping to soften scar tissue, reduce restriction and encourage ease of movement. Whether your caesarean birth was recent or many years ago, it is never too late to support healing and reconnect with your body in a gentle and supported way.
Many women experience sensations of pulling, tightness or discomfort around their scar, which can sometimes affect other areas such as the back, chest or pelvic floor. Scar therapy supports nerve and tissue mobility, helping to reduce pain, sensitivity and numbness while encouraging the scar to feel softer and more comfortable. Changes in how a scar looks or feels can also affect confidence and body image, as well as everyday activities such as clothing choices, intimacy and returning to exercise. This gentle work aims to support both physical comfort and emotional wellbeing, helping you feel more at ease in your body as you recover.

Scar therapy is a gentle, hands-on approach designed to support the softening and movement of scar tissue after surgery. It focuses not only on the scar itself but also on the surrounding tissues, helping to restore comfort, flexibility and natural mobility. Many women notice that scar therapy can reduce sensations of pulling, tightness or numbness, improve posture and ease of movement, and support lymphatic flow and overall body balance.
During a session, your scar is assessed in the context of your whole body, including how it may be affecting nearby tissues, breathing patterns, fascia and pelvic floor function. Each session is personalised, recognising that no two scars or bodies are the same. The aim is to encourage both physical comfort and emotional wellbeing, supporting your recovery and helping you feel more at ease in your body.

Even a small caesarean scar involves multiple layers of skin, muscle, fascia and nerves, and can have effects beyond the surface. Without gentle care, scar tissue may lead to sensations of tightness, pulling, pelvic floor tension, numbness or changes in how you breathe, as well as swelling above the scar. These restrictions can influence not only the abdomen but the way your whole body moves and feels. Scar therapy helps release these tensions, improving flexibility, comfort and overall function, so your body can move more freely and feel balanced.

Scar therapy sessions are one-to-one and delivered by an experienced midwife. Treatment is gentle, personalised and paced to your needs, with careful explanation and consent throughout. Sessions focus on your scar, surrounding tissues, and any related discomfort, with attention to how the scar may be affecting posture, movement and overall wellbeing.
Each appointment provides a safe, supportive space to ask questions, reconnect with your body, and feel cared for.

Alongside hands on scar therapy and other treatments, I often recommend the use of medical grade silicone to support caesarean scar healing. Silicone has been widely used in scar management and is considered one of the most effective topical approaches for improving scar quality.
Silicone sheets are placed gently over the scar to help protect the area and maintain optimal hydration within the tissue. This supportive environment can encourage more balanced healing, helping the scar become softer, flatter and more flexible over time. Many women also find that silicone reduces redness, itching and discomfort as the scar matures.
The use of silicone may help prevent the development of raised or thickened scar tissue and can improve the overall appearance and feel of a caesarean scar. Recommendations are discussed individually during your appointment, ensuring that silicone therapy is appropriate for your stage of healing and integrated safely into your scar care plan.
